| Standing at the
railing of the fishing boat, the high seas and salt spray go
unnoticed as all attention is focused on keeping a firm grasp
on your fishing pole. At the other end of the fishing line, a
70-pound billfish fights to free itself and return to the deep
seas around Aruba which it calls home. In the temperate
Caribbean waters of Aruba, a variety of Atlantic game fish can
be caught year-round. |
 |
 |
Sailfish, white and blue marlin, wahoo, shark, barracuda,
amberjack, kingfish, bonito, and blackfin and yellowfin tuna
are abundant just off the coast. The experienced captain and
their first mate will help the vacationing fishing enthusiast
bring in any fish, even if they have little previous
experience. You can sail for either a full day or a half-day
on many of the fishing boats. Many restaurants will even cook
and serve your catch of the day!

| A feeling of
exhilaration, and perhaps even a bit of apprehension, is
experienced just as the parachute fills with air and you
begin to lift up off the boat and into the air above
Aruba's coast. All fears, however, quickly dissipate as
you glide assuredly under a full chute, the feeling of
weightlessness and freedom unrivaled only by the
dramatic views offered by your bird's eye view of the
island and a seemingly endless Caribbean Sea during a
15-minute parasail ride. |
 |
 |
| Sea breezes
stimulate the senses as you recline along the deck of
a slick catamaran, luxuriating in the soothing
sensation of gliding across the sea's surface as you
are served colorful cocktails. Equally enticing is
slicing the waves on a mono-hull, wooden ship, and in
experiencing the splendor of white sails billowing
overhead and blue seas stretching far out into the
distance ahead. |
 |
 |
The calm waters of Aruba's leeward coast is great for
sailing and the steady trade winds ensure favorable
sailing conditions, whether taking advantage of
snorkeling adventures, sunset sails or dinner cruises.

Penetrating the impressive hull of an underwater wreck often
means coming across a school of anchovies or a watchful
snapper hiding in the corner. Often it is enough to enjoy
the play of light as it too finds its way into the wreck,
reflecting off the bubbles emitted by your dive buddy.
Aruba earns its reputation as the wreck dive destination of
the Caribbean with over half a dozen wrecks submerged in its
waters. The Antilla, a German freighter -- which at close to
400 feet long, is also the Caribbean's largest wreck -- is
by far the favorite, even among longtime, resident divers,
who always seem to find something new at the site.
If you have the yen to take your first plunge as a scuba
diver, you can take an afternoon out to do a resort course
that will provide the skills necessary to complete one
30-foot dive.
A resort course consists of 90-minute classroom instruction
and a one-hour lesson in the pool before you enter the water
at the Pedernalis wreck dive site to try out your new
"lungs."
An intermediary to the Open Water certification is PADI's
SCUBA Diver level (a two-day course consisting of three
hours in the classroom and, if resort dive has already been
accomplished, just on more pool and open water dives),
allowing for dives up to 40 feet when accompanied by a dive
professional.
But undoubtedly, if you have been bitten by the diving bug,
you'll want to upgrade your certification. To become
certified for Open Water Diver, it takes a commitment of
four days -- with 4-hour classroom instruction in the first
two days followed by two more days of a two-hour classroom
study course. Practical work comes in the form of four
assisted dives, two of which cannot be completed until after
the student successfully completes a written exam..

| Buoyed by the salt water
of an aqua-colored wonderland, the way illuminated by
shafts of light piercing the surface, swimmers
undertake an underwater exploration of Aruba's warm,
welcoming marine environment. Coming eye-to-eye with a
majestic Queen Angelfish as it swims by the coral
reef, marveling at a diminutive damselfish as it
guards its home by waving sea fans or encountering an
entire school of blue parrotfish is an everyday
experience. |

| The slow descent to the ocean floor
reveals a changing kaleidoscope of colors and movement
as tropical fish weave through underwater environment.
A huge school of anchovies swiftly changes direction
in a slick, silvery line as a large barracuda makes
its entrance, while yellow grunts and sturgeon fish
swim unconcerned nearby. Closer near the seabed,
thousands of tiny coral colonies wind and twist over
every surface creating a textured array of
impressively large examples of boulder coral, brain
coral and pillar coral. |
 |
 |
The seeming tranquility of the environment is
heightened by the waving sea fans and purple soft
coral slowly undulating with the tide. Sudden movement
catches the eye as a hawksbill turtle emerges from the
sea grass and glides sedately out of view. The wonders
of Aruba's underwater environment are accessible even
to non-swimmers with Aruba's options of submarine,
semi-submarine and sea trek adventures. The remains of
shipwrecks, spectacular coral reefs and an abundance
of colorful sea life comes into even sharper view
through a fully narrated tour. |
